Removing a tree from your property can be sad. There are many reasons why homeowners might be faced with that difficult decision. However, all is not lost when you decide that a tree has to come down. You have the opportunity to turn your old tree stump into a work of art with chainsaw carving. There are many different images that you can have your stump carved into. It is important note that there are some trees that make better candidates for chainsaw carving than others. The Wright Carver is here to talk about the things that make a tree stump ideal for carving.
Factors to Consider Before Carving a Tree Stump
There are several things to consider before you can appropriately determine whether or not your tree stump is able to be carved. Here are some of the main things that need to be considered:
– Age of Stump: The first thing you need to consider is the age of the stump. It is ideal for carvings for the stump to be cut recently. You want to have a stump carved within the first year after cutting down the tree. After that, the wood dries out and is far more prone to cracking and damage. If you’re planning on having a tree stump carved, make arrangements to have it carved right after you have it cut down.
– Tree Stump Size: Another thing that has to be considered is the size of the stump you’re working with. Before you have your tree cut down, consider this. The taller you leave the stump, the more there will be for the carver to work with. You also need to have a stump that is at least 12 inches around so that there is adequate wood. If the stump is too small, it simply won’t be possible. If you have a choice in how tall you are leaving the stump, consider leaving a bit more than you normally would.
– Tree Species: Some tree species make better candidates for chainsaw carving than others. The wood needs to be soft enough to carve, but durable enough that it isn’t going to sustain damage in the elements. For instance, pine is soft and easy to carve, but it is more susceptible to rot. Oak on the other hand, is much more durable, but the hardness of the wood can make it more difficult to carve. The ideal tree species is black walnut for the ease of carving and the durability of the wood against the elements.
– Condition of Tree Stump: The condition of the stump is another consideration to make. The wood can’t be diseased or hollow.
