For most people, when they have a chainsaw carving created, they want to do whatever they can to preserve it. This is one of the most unique ways to display art in your home or on your property. When you have a beautiful carving that you’re trying to preserve, the best way to do it is make sure it has the sealer on it that it needs. The Wright Carver is here to share some tips to help you protect your chainsaw carving from the elements so that you can enjoy it for years to come.
How Often Do You Need to Seal Your Chainsaw Carving?
When you have a chainsaw carving, and important part of extending its life is to make sure it has the sealer on it that it needs. Once the carving is initially completed, it will be coated in a sealer to keep it preserved. This isn’t likely going to be the last time you coat it with sealer though. You should be coating it with sealer at least once or twice a year if you are storing the carving in the outdoors. If you have an indoor carving, it will be far less frequent. When sealing your carving, you will want to use a high quality deck sealer to get the job done.
Tips for Maintaining an Outdoor Carving
One of the best places to display your chainsaw carving is outside so you can share it with others. There are just a few things that you should consider when storing your carving outside:
– The sun is hard on your carving. If you are able to store it in a shady spot, your carving will do much better.
– Make sure your carving isn’t making contact with the ground. It should be placed up on a concrete block, paver or other material that will keep it from rotting on the bottom.
– Inspect your carving often. If it is starting to look dry, discolored or isn’t repelling water any longer, it is time to seal it again.
Tips for Maintaining an Indoor Carving
If you are planning on keeping your chainsaw carving inside your home, your maintenance is going to look a little different.
– Store the chainsaw carving away from any source of heat. It shouldn’t be near heat registers, fireplaces or in direct sunlight. This can dry out the carving.
– Keep your chainsaw carving off the ground. There is moisture in the wood, and you don’t want it to start to rot. It needs to have airflow underneath it. You can put furniture pads on the underside of the carving to give it the space it needs.
– Look for discoloration. If you start to notice discoloring, you know it’s time to seal it again.
